Sprint Chairman Shouting and Firing His Way to the Top

It's obvious that Softbank CEO and Sprint Chairman, Masayoshi Son doesn't like to lose. But then again who does?
When Son was asked why he'd want to buy Sprint, he stated "I am a man, and every man wants to be number one, not number two or number three." The Wall Street Journal has published a new profile on the Softbank CEO giving us some new information about Sprint's Chairman, that some of us may not have known. Son hasn't lost any desire to win in the US, even with Sprint's hardships in the past few years, like adopting WiMax instead of LTE.
Son started to whip Sprint into shape with a lot of yelling. Son saw a few of Sprint's ads that aired in 2013 and started yelling at the execs in the room saying "Are you stupid?", then suggested that Sprint fire their ad agency. WSJ also says that Son is having a harder time getting Sprint into shape compared to other carriers he's acquired over the years. According to sources of the WSJ, "Son has been frustrated by what he sees at the slow pace of change at the wireless carrier" since their acquisition. This isn't too surprising, as Sprint has been a distant third behind Verizon and AT&T for quite some time. It's mostly due to two major decisions that weren't the best in the past 10 years. That's buying Nextel, which was a complete debacle that they are still recovering from. The other was choosing WiMax for their 4G technology instead of LTE. Why was that an issue? Well because every other carrier chose LTE instead, making it tougher for Sprint to get premier handsets. Since the manufacturer would have to make another model specifically for Sprint.
The Journal states that Son is working to get rid of that "loser" mentality, which is his biggest short-term goal. But so far we haven't seen much change with Sprint, and one could argue that it's too soon to see change, and I'd actually agree. But I hope we do see some big changes with Sprint rather soon. I'd love to see all four US carriers be more competitive with each other. How about the rest of you?
